Summer Placement Student Recap

Summer Placement Student Recap

It has been 3 weeks since I began my summer placement at Mitso, and I have nothing but great things to say. It has been an incredibly fulfilling time so far at the company. I would like to share some of what I’ve learned from each member of the team.

Firstly, I worked alongside Gemma, the team’s Senior Graphic Designer, to better understand her role with Mitso and shadow her across several exciting design projects. It all begins with a client meeting with the team where they discuss brand concepts and brainstorm ways to incorporate core values and key messages from the client. Then, Gemma takes this feedback and uses her creative process to produce multiple options – this was something I found particularly interesting and learned how a designer can use client feedback to get creative and gain further inspiration, incorporating it into the final designs.

Working with Charlotte, the Brand Communication Manager, I have helped develop copy for social media posts, websites, and blog posts as well as influencer relations and management. She taught me how to schedule client social content to different platforms and plan to post at the most optimal times for engagement. It was particularly interesting to write website content for a Bermuda company, being familiar with the company climate in my hometown. Charlotte taught me how to write and adjust my copy depending on the company project; some copy was more informal, like social media captions, while other copy required a more formal tone, like an introductory homepage. I really enjoyed the variety of copywriting and now no two days, or clients, are the same!

Ciara, the Digital Marketing Manager, worked with me to show how digital advertising campaigns work. I was shocked at the level of detail and targeting involved in the process of advertising. Ciara also oversees lots of website projects and demonstrated how she regularly manages project timelines during weekly team catch ups. My favourite aspect of shadowing Ciara was helping create TikToks for Colin Glen. I worked to review existing video content, draft optimised captions and select trending music to deliver the highest engagement. I also learned how to use Facebook Ad Library which proved extremely useful in some market research I completed.

Maeve has been incredibly patient as I learn the ropes of marketing. From my time on our weekly calls, I have seen Maeve lead the team and delegate tasks effectively. She tackles every aspect of the marketing process and it has been admirable to see her dedication to each client. Maeve also has a critical eye about Mitso itself which I find to be very respectable. During my time at Mitso, I gathered market research for Mitso and completed a digital review of Mitso and its competitors. Overall, Maeve taught me how to think critically, as well as showing me how to multitask for many different clients and how to stay on task.

From shadowing different members of the team, I have learned a variety of new skills already from my short time here at Mitso. I helped develop and schedule social media content for Colin Glen, including TikTok and Instagram Reel content, as well as aiding with email campaigns, blog creation and scheduling as well as influencer relations for Colin Glen. I updated websites with imagery and copy for clients such as Fearon Bros and Gnosis, and also helped with general administrative tasks, sending emails, conducting market research and drafting proposals for various other clients.

My favourite part of my Mitso placement has been creating the social media content for Colin Glen for the month. It was creatively challenging, but super rewarding to see my work on an actual client’s social media platforms. I think that being a college-aged student means that I have a good grasp of TikTok content and virality on social media, so it has been fulfilling to provide new ideas to the Mitso team and their clients.

After spending time at Mitso, I’ve learned how diverse the clientele can be. I had no idea so many types of companies and businesses seek out marketing help, and I love that it keeps things interesting. I am so grateful to the Mitso team for all of their help throughout my placement, and I am looking forward to continue working for Mitso for the remainder of my summer placement. The real-life skills and knowledge I have acquired are undoubtedly invaluable.

For anyone thinking about doing a marketing placement, I would suggest researching current market and social media trends and practicing writing various styles of copy. I am certainly looking forward to implementing the skills I learned both in my coursework as well as in the school startup I work for!
